Piper watched the would-be doctor, Henry Fulton, who used to be an athletic trainer and gym teacher, doing his best to seem professional. Wearing the same plastic gloves used to handle frozen foods and hot dog buns, and making sure everything was cleaned with the hand sanitizer they’d found in a break room drawer, he did his very best.

The scene wasn’t nearly as awkward as Piper had thought. She did have to look away the first time Jane parted her knees so Henry could see how far along she was, but she understood that she was the only one who thought it was strange. She did notice how Mary was giving him an almost scornful, scrutinizing gaze, though.

“Seven centimeters, I’d say,” Henry said, taking off the gloves and tossing them into the wastebasket by the wall. “Maybe eight. Hard to tell…I’m not exactly an expert at this.”

“You don’t need to keep reminding me,” Jane said with a groan.

It was a strange situation for Piper because she could tell Henry was just as nervous as Jane and Mary. Piper, meanwhile, was trying to hide all of her emotions: the excitement of taking part in a real-life birth and the horror of…well, the horror of taking part in a real-life birth.

Meanwhile, Piper remained in awe of him, a man of about forty or so who was doing what was necessary in the moment. He was equipped with only break room supplies, some blankets, and gloves that were used to make sandwiches, but he was somehow going to deliver this baby.

“Water, please,” Jane said, her head tilted slightly in Piper’s direction.

Piper acted quickly, springing to action and grabbing the bottle of water Jane had been working on ever since Tabitha had brought the waters into the room. She wasn’t sure how long ago that had been. It felt like a few hours at least. She held the bottle to Jane’s lips and gently tilted the bottle, pouring the water down her throat.

As Jane swallowed it down, she let out a little moan of fear. She’d made similar sounds a few times in the past half hour or so and Piper had come to understand it was more or less a precursor to another contraction.

“Another one coming?” Henry asked. He was sliding on another pair of those thin, plastic gloves and readjusting his posture as he remained on his knees. He’d placed a single blanket under his knees to help cushion him and so far, it seemed to keep him from any sort of discomfort. Though, Piper assumed that even
